The beauty of nature comes in many forms, and one of these is can be seen in the air. Several species of birds and insects have colorful patterns which made the skies they live in more vibrant and energetic.





Io Moth

The Io moth (Automeris io) is a colorful moth which ranges throughout the United States and the southern corners of Canada. Males are more brightly-colored than females, and they possess eye spots on their hind wings to ward off predators.


Hornbill

The rhinoceros hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) and the rafflesia (Rafflesia arnoldii) are some of the most notable inhabitants in the tropical rainforests of Malaysian Borneo. The hornbill is the state bird of the Malaysian state of Sarawak.

The Raggiana bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea raggiana) is one of the most well-known members of the bird-of-paradise family. It is the national bird of Papua New Guinea, where it is distributed widely.

The plate-billed mountain toucan (Andigena laminirostris) is a vividly-colored toucan that is native to the South American countries of Colombia and Ecuador. This toucan lives in high-altitude mountain forests at the northern part of the Andes mountain range. The bird’s colorations vary by geographical range.

The yellow oriole (Icterus nigrogularis) is a yellow-and-black-coloured bird that can be found in tropical South America. In the painting, it is paired with a ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris).



Kookaburra

The blue-winged kookaburra (Dacelo leachii) is a member of the kingfisher family that lives in Australia and southern New Guinea. It is slightly smaller than the more widely-known laughing kookaburra. The kookaburras are named for their unique call.




King Vulture

The king vulture (Sarcoramphus papa) is a colorful member of the vulture family which lives in Central and South America, ranging from southern Mexico to northern Argentina and Uruguay. This vulture has grey and black feathers, while its featherless head and neck vary in skin color including yellow, orange, blue, purple and red. In the painting, it is seen along with a pair of maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus).




Pink-Necked Green Pigeon

The pink-necked green pigeon (Treron vernans) is said to be one of the most colorful pigeons in the world, and can be commonly seen in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, where it is called "punai gading" in its local language. Its feathers are mostly green and only males have the namesake pink-colored feathers on their necks. The painting depicts the color differences between the female on the left and the male on the right.






Ivory-Billed Woodpecker

The ivory-billed woodpecker (Campephilus principalis) is one of the largest woodpeckers in the world and one of the rarest birds. The last confirmed sighting of this bird was in 1944 and reported sightings have continued into the 21st century.
