BLASTS OF THE PAST

An early dinosaur portrait series made by the artist.

Blasts of the Past, acrylic on canvas, 2020. Set of 9, each piece 8" X 8"

Spinosaurid

Spinosaurid head, acrylic on canvas, 2020.

The Spinosauridae is a family of carnivorous dinosaurs. They lived primarily in the Early Cretaceous period and are known to have eaten fish. This reconstruction of Spinosaurus makes this dinosaur a dangerous and deadly predator.

Torosaurus

Torosaurus head, acrylic on canvas, 2020.

Torosaurus (name meaning "bull/pierced lizard") is a three-horned herbivorous dinosaur from the late Cretaceous period. Looking quite similar to its contemporary cousin, the Triceratops, these dinosaurs were thought to have been the same species.

Parasaurolophus

Parasaurolophus head, acrylic on canvas, 2020.

Parasaurolophus is a plant-eating dinosaur which is a member of the hadrosaur family. Like some hadrosaurs, Parasaurolophus had a bony and hollow crest on top of its head, which might have been used in communication among individuals of the same species.

Stygimoloch

Stygimoloch head, acrylic on canvas, 2020.

Stygimoloch had one of the most elaborate heads of any hornless plant-eating dinosaurs. It is a member of the pachycephalosaurid group of plant-eating dinosaurs, which are known for their thick, domed skulls. Recent research had proposed that Stygimoloch may actually be the same species as Pachycephalosaurus.

Saichania

Saichania head, acrylic on canvas, 2020.

Saichania is an armored, plant-eating dinosaur which lived in Mongolia during the Late Cretaceous period. Its name means “beautiful one” in the Mongolian language, for its elaborate, spiky armor plating.

Dilophosaurus

Inaccurate Dilophosaurus, acrylic on canvas, 2020.

Dilophosaurus (“double-crested lizard”) is a predatory dinosaur which lived in the Early Jurassic Period. It is known for the two bony crests on top of its head. However, most reconstructions of this dinosaur since its appearance in the film, Jurassic Park, in 1993, have incorporated features such as a neck frill, where no fossil evidence was found for such features existing on this particular species.

Carnotaurus

Carnotaurus head, acrylic on canvas, 2020.

Carnotaurus is a carnivorous theropod dinosaur which lived in South America during the late Cretaceous period. It had two bony, horn-like structures on top of its head. This dinosaur had one of the smallest pairs of arms among theropod dinosaurs. Its skin is covered in a mosaic of hard scales and large bony bumps called osteoderms.

Tyrannosaurus rex

Tyrannosaurus rex head, acrylic on canvas, 2020.

Tyrannosaurus rex is by far one of the most well-known of the meat-eating dinosaurs. It was also one of the last carnivorous dinosaurs to walk the earth, existing for about two million years until the end of the age of dinosaurs, during the Late Cretaceous period.

Camarasaurus

Camarasaurus head, acrylic on canvas, 2020

Camarasaurus (name meaning "chamber lizard") is a long-necked sauropod dinosaur from the late Jurassic Period. This sauropod is known from its box-shaped head with a blunt snout. It had chisel-shaped teeth which enables it to feed on coarser vegetation than other sauropods.
